Did you know that California dates are one of the best natural sources of potassium!? Even more than bananas!

We all know that refueling and rehydrating after exercise is key to recovery. Why do we eat bananas after a strenuous workout? Because potassium isn’t stored in the body, and we lose A LOT through perspiration, so we need to constantly replenish our body’s supply.

Our bodies need this essential mineral for several reasons:

1. To help maintain muscle contractions (including the heart muscle!)

2. To help maintain a healthy nervous system

3.  To balance our metabolism.

As we consume potassium, our bodies excrete sodium, which helps to keep our blood pressure down (as we age, our kidneys become less efficient at sodium elimination)

It’s been shown that a 400 mg increase in potassium consumption can decrease risk of stroke by up to 40%! What’s an easy way to get 400 mg of potassium? A serving of California dates!

Raw food for recovery?

“Arguably of even greater importance than the raw materials that foods do or do not supply is the ease at which they are digested, absorbed, assimilated, and eliminated. The less our food choices demand upon our digestive and metabolic capacity, the greater opportunity the body has available for recovery and regeneration after our training sessions…”   Keep reading! Why Eat a Plant-Based Diet?.

January online sales to benefit the Giving Circle of Saratoga Springs and construction of AIDS orphanage in Jinja, Uganda

koikoi

For the entire month of January, we have decided to donate 15% of each online order to the Giving Circle of Saratoga . The Giving Circle, Inc., incorporated in March 2006, is a Saratoga-based nonprofit organization founded by 2006 Jefferson Award Honoree Mark Bertrand, and jockeys Aaron Gryder and Shane Sellers. The mission of The Giving Cirle, Inc. is matching communities in need with those who can provide resources.

I recently learned about this organization through Hot Yoga Saratoga. During the month of January, I will be participating in a 30 Day Challenge “Hot Yogathon”. The money donated through our online sales will help sponsor me in this challenge. All sponsorship proceeds will be going to the The Giving Circle Uganda, which will be working with the Uganda Children’s Hope Foundation to help fund the construction of and AIDS orphanage, the Koi Koi House, in Jinja, Uganda.

The goal of this initiative to help the approximate  1 million Ugandan children who have been orphaned, by first purchasing a 5 acre plot of land for construction of the base orphanage and dorms. A garden/animal farming system will enable  the development of a sustainable micro-business model. The plan is for housing to then be built, as well as a school and health clinic.

Check out this video to learn more .

Any donation makes an impact. Their goal during the first phase of purchasing land, water well, base orphanage/home, livestock is $30,000 - which translates to 1,500 people each donating only $20!

Thank you helping KD Energy be a part of this!
